How many times have you stood at the entrance to a networking mixer frozen in fear? “A root canal would be easier than this,” you say to yourself. Having to make small talk with strangers, trying to be interesting and charming, is not your strength nor your idea of a good time. But you believe that if you can just endure this for an hour, you might walk away with some valuable new contacts. The reality is that your discomfort often has negative results, and you don’t gain the new relationships you had sought.

In the 1930s, Swiss psychologist Carl Jung coined the term introvert as someone who tends to find his psychological energy within… in the world of thought, contemplation and reflection. This inward focus can result in a tendency to pull back and maintain a safe distance, especially around new people.

In the world of networking, introverts can face a long list of daunting challenges - not the least of which is sending nonverbal messages that may be misinterpreted as aloofness. And “aloof” is not a good message when your purpose is to mix, mingle, and foster new relationships.

As a card-carrying introvert myself (by Jung’s definition), I’ve developed some guidelines that have always worked well and have allowed me to be confident and outgoing at networking events. Practice these, and you will soon become the “master of the mixer”:

1. Create a plan before each event: “Winging it” never works for introverts, because spontaneity is not usually a strength. So having a plan can greatly boost confidence.

Do some pre-work before the event. Think about who will be there and who you would like to meet.

Make a list of goals before you leave the house - how many new contacts do you want to make tonight? How will you approach them? Prepare for “small talk” by reviewing current events in your head; take a mental assessment of recent books you’ve read, movies you’ve seen, or interesting stories you’ve heard — always good conversation starters and fillers for awkward moments.

2. Enter the room with a purpose and a plan: Most of us feel uncomfortable during the first few moments when we enter a networking event, particularly if we don’t know anyone.

First, think positive, powerful thoughts “I am energetic, confident and successful. Tonight I will meet (3, 5, 10) people who will be helpful to my business or others in my network.” By thinking and visualizing positive situations, your energy will draw others to you; it’s a law of nature!

If there is no greeter to make you feel more comfortable, take a moment to stand at the entrance and survey the room (As though you are looking for someone…). Be aware of your body language; don’t slump or try to disappear into the woodwork, but enter with authority. Pretend you are the king or queen making your grand entrance, and your body language will say that you are confident and approachable.

As you enter, get the lay of the land and look specifically for three things: (a) the buffet, (b) the bar, and/or (c) someone sitting or standing alone. Choose one of these as your target, so that when you make your journey across the room, you have a goal and are not awkwardly meandering around.

(a) The buffet line is always a good place to meet people. Make a mental note of anything interesting and just “think out loud” to the person next to you. “Incredible ice sculpture,” you could comment. Or, “Wow, I didn’t know shrimp came in this size!” She will have to respond in some way, and you can follow with, “Is this your first _____ event?” The conversation will easily flow from there.

(b) Same thing at the bar — While waiting in line, strike up a conversation, “Wow… this already looks like a great event; I didn’t expect so many people. Have you been here before?”

(c) Once you have your food or drink in hand (Only occupy one hand; keep one free for shaking), approach the person sitting alone, and say with a smile, “Mind if I join you?”

3. Ask questions, listen carefully, and don’t worry about selling yourself: The most charming and fascinating people are the greatest listeners. Listening also gives you an advantage in uncovering potential customers or job prospects.

Ask the person about her business; about hobbies, family, city of origin, etc. It’s very probable that somewhere in that conversation you will uncover a need, and you will be able to help her find an answer or resource.

Armed with information, you can say, “Oh! So your brother is looking for a home in the area? I know a great (realtor, landscaper, plumber).”

By giving before asking, you encourage people to trust you, and they will feel an unconscious need to reciprocate by sending business or resources to you as well.

Once we introverts practice the simple principles of planning our approach; reviewing topics for conversation; and taking the spotlight off ourselves by focusing it on other people, we’ll not only become more comfortable in networking situations, but may find ourselves the life of the party!

2. Use your normal tone of voice when greeting a visitor. If you have a tendency to speak loud or shout, avoid doing so while greeting the visitor.

Bookkeeping is an essential, if not the most imperative aspect of business. It is, in fact, the one department that can make or break a business. Proper bookkeeping can help turn around losing ventures. By the same token, poor bookkeeping can ruin an otherwise profitable enterprise.

Since only a skilled and capable bookkeeper can manage the complex and multifarious responsibilities this department entails, in-house bookkeeping might prove unprofitable at best and disastrous at worst. Therefore, it is wise to employ online bookkeeping services.

Outsourcing is nothing more than shifting the work to a specialized bookkeeping firm. The practice of outsourcing bookkeeping has become prevalent among businesses all over the world. Online bookkeeping has the benefit of convenience and affordability coupled with professionalism. Professionals associated with online bookkeeping service providers are dedicated bookkeepers who have thorough knowledge on all aspects pertaining to bookkeeping. Besides, these professionals are often Certified Public Accountants who know bookkeeping and accounting inside out.

There are a considerable number of web-based companies that offer online bookkeeping services. Such firms provide services to many types of businesses whether small, medium or large-scale. Therefore, any entrepreneur or business manager, provided he gives it some time, can easily procure the online bookkeeping service that best fulfill his business needs.

Obviously, businesses differ from one another. For this reason, it is imperative to hire the appropriate online bookkeeping service that caters to the specific needs of a business. As soon as the specialist-vendor from whom the online bookkeeping service would be outsourced is selected, it is critical for the business owner to let the professional bookkeeper understand and be familiar with the specific nature and needs of the business.

It is likewise critical to understand that accounting is a complex function that involves many tasks - maintaining ledgers, journals, reconciling various accounts, preparing balance sheets and other financial statements to name a few. The bookkeeper who has mastered the art of accounting knows that the slightest mistake can result in gaping discrepancies in the final figures. The professional, therefore, enters each and every detail with utmost care to assure, mistake-free work that is most beneficial to the business owner.

Securing online bookkeeping service is one of the most astute move a business owner can make. It pays to procure this kind of service as it provides any business with intelligent and cost-effective solution, generate savings in terms of time, manpower and money and helps business owners expand their enterprise towards growing the business.

Online Bookkeeping Services improves financial operations as well as increases the level of efficiency, adaptability and ability to wok with the market conditions while at the same time curtailing risks and costs. There are many reliable online bookkeeping firms that cater to small and medium businesses worldwide.

Homebased business - Generation Gap

Feb 18, 2008 Author: admin | Filed under: Business

I’m hearing a lot about the generation gap in business; that young people are not working well with their elders, and there may very well be a lot of truth in this. Following World War II, the “Greatest Generation” took over and dominated business like never before. The 50’s and 60’s were the go-go years that propelled the American economy. During the 1960s’ the “Baby Boomers” started to rebel and attacked the taboos of the day. Nonetheless, they eventually acclimated into the corporate cultures and learned from their elders. But a generational split occurred during the 1980’s and 90’s, and I attribute it to two reasons:

First, when the PC was introduced in the 1980’s a new generation of younger workers were introduced to program and maintain them, A split then occurred in the Information Technology field whereby the “old guys” took care of the mainframes and the “young guys” stood in the opposing camp. Both thought they were right and wouldn’t cooperate, hence the split. Ironically, both groups were right as we needed both technologies. But management didn’t see this and allowed the division to grow and fester. This carried over into other parts of the work force where new attitudes challenged older and more established ones. In other words, technology played a significant role in the split.

Second, during the cost-cutting and downsizing years of the 1980’s and 1990’s companies abandoned the mentoring system, whereby older employees worked with younger people to teach them the business. Without such mentoring, the younger generation pushed the envelope over how business was conducted. Hence, the rise of individualism and changes in the workplace such as dress and social attitudes.

Interestingly, mentoring is starting to experience a resurgence as companies find it to be an effective approach for developing employees and promoting teamwork. Mentoring is a good approach for helping the younger people make the transition into the corporate culture and ultimately take over the business. It’s natural and should be encouraged. Actually, we have had progressive classes of workers for literally thousands of years, e.g.; apprentices, intermediaries, and master craftsmen.

The one good thing resulting from the latest talk of generation gaps in business is that it is forcing companies to rethink social attitudes in the workplace. Such discussion is inevitable as companies have to learn to work as a team as opposed to a group of individuals.

Business news - Taco Stand Entrepreneurs Cook Up A Fortune

Feb 2, 2008 Author: admin | Filed under: Business

Many people think starting your own business is only afforded by the well educated or that it takes a lot of money and that’s it’s so complicated only an Ive Leaguer could handle it. The most often phrase heard when discussing entrepreneurship is, “I can’t do it” or ” I don’t have any idea what to do.” or how about, “I just don’t think I’m cut out for it.” Most people are intimidated by the very idea of striking out on their own, being their own boss or taking on the responsibility of ownership. They have the false belief they aren’t smart enough or worthy to be a business owner.

For most people starting out on their own is to simply answer the question: “How can I take what I already know and do it better than anyone else?” The very first thing they should consider is to do something they truly love. Involve themselves in something they already have a passion for.

I know sometimes it is not possible to peruse your true passion because perhaps your passion is not shared by many. It that case find a niche, a need, and simply fill it to the best of your ability. There are many valuable services that do not require years of apprenticeship before qualifying to be a provider.

Get Your Brain In Gear.

What do you do to get the creative process going? First, take a sheet of paper and write down five to seven things you like to do or that you are really good at. Example: I am really good with plants, I love working with growing things, I love dogs, I really like cooking, I’m good at presenting myself before people. Just put down whatever you think of; it doesn’t have to make sense.

Now make a list of the things you don’t like and think you would be good at. Maybe you are a really good truck driver, but you don’t want to travel. Or, you like selling at the Flea Market but you don’t like retail sales. When you have finished with both lists, ask yourself: Are there three to five products or services that benefit me and my family and if there are, what are they?

Don’t be afraid to dig into your personal life, whatever your situation may be and determine what products or services make your life better, easier or happier, make you more productive or efficient, or simply give you more time. From that, what service could you be providing for others to help them enjoy life more? Sometimes it’s the simplest of things that make people happy. It doesn’t have to be complicated or hard to figure out, it just has to be functional.

Now, turn the paper over and write the same question about your working life. Look at what you do and don’t like about the work you have been doing as well as what others do and don’t like about you. Finally, ask yourself why you want to go into business for yourself in the first place. Then, when all is said and done, look for a reasoning to emerge (i.e., is there a need for a business doing one of the things you like or are good at?).

They Filled The Need With Roberto’s Tacos To Go

Let me give you an example.

I live in San Diego, California in an area containing a College. Within five blocks of my home there is any type of cuisine a person could desire. The College students and people who work in the small businesses have to go out because there are not many easily accessible places to go during lunch hour.

Several years ago, two brothers found this lunch situation very frustrating and realized the potential in starting a quick take-out service. There just weren’t many affordable choices where a person could get a fast lunch. Even though restaurants were plentiful the parking and waiting lines made lunch impossible.

They opened a taco stand near the college, where people could grab a quick lunch and get back to class or work. They gave their customers an extra amount on the tacos and friendly service to boot. They were the first to come up with the fish taco which became a big hit. Today their taco stands are found in five western states. They saw the opportunity and with very little cash, provided a product and service that was well received. While these brothers initially thought they were filling a local need, they actually struck a universal demand. Their situation was not unique to their area, it was, in fact, common to many areas.

Small Business Owner Concerns

“Regardless of company size, the concerns of executive management are all essentially the same.” - Bryce’s Law

I was recently at a gathering of independent consultants from around the Tampa Bay area and we got around to talking about the concerns of owners of small businesses. From this, we devised a list of pet peeves commanding the attention of small-to-medium sized business owners, to with:

  • Employees/Human Resources - staffing and allocations, payroll, benefits, and management.
  • Work environment - facilities and equipment, corporate culture.
  • Systems - implementing business processes productively, and staying abreast of technological developments for competitive advantage.
  • Regulations - complying with rules as established by government and industrial concerns.
  • Time Management - scheduling and devoting time to the proper set of priorities.
  • Financial Resources - managing and planning cash flow and investments for optimal return on investment.
  • General Planning & Strategy - both short term and long term, including an analysis of the market and competition.

At the end of this session, we discovered that the concerns of small business owners are essentially no different than large corporations, except on a much smaller scale. The only difference was that the small business owner has to move faster than his corporate counterparts simply due to the size of his operation. For example, he doesn’t have time to read voluminous business plans and financial statements. Instead, he requires summary reports which get to the point in a couple of pages. He needs good, sound supporting advice to make his life easier.

This got me thinking about the amount of time and money corporate executives invest in managing their company’s affairs. True, some things require considerable time and effort to investigate, such as researching new products/services and checking market conditions, but most of what is done is what I refer to as “meatball” type analysis which should be easy and relatively inexpensive to prepare.
